Mai Valentine is a middle class girl used to the finer things in life. However her parents were so busy with their work that she grew up pretty lonely. She soon began playing Duel Monsters and wanted to be the best Duelist in the world. She worked as a card dealer on a casino. She found the Harpy Lady Cards there which became a signature part of her deck. She sprayed her cards with different scented perfumes to fake being psychic so she could scam people out of their money. One of them, Jean-Claude Magnum proposed to her but she refused. She told him to come back when he was a better duelist. She soon got bored of the casino and left.
She won a few tournaments earning a place in the upcoming Duelist Kingdom championship. In the mail she got a glove with two starchips and two qualifing cards one to win the prize money and the second to play for something else. She kept both but planned to get the prize money knowing her scam wouldn't work much longer. She also got a heart shaped locket and a letter about a retreat at an mansion on an island. She decided to ignore it and head to Duelist Kingdom. With the prize money she'd be rich and wouldn't need friends or a man to keep her company. But she got on the wrong boat only realizing as it was halfway to the island. She reluctantly gave in deciding she might as well enjoy the free vacation she was getting along with this.

Mai sat in her room glancing at her deck. She'd made a lot of stragies to prepare for the finals. She even heard Yugi Mutou had been going. He'd beaten Seto Kaiba, so whoever beat Yugi would be the next King of Games.
"That should be me. I should be winning the prize money and Yugi's title. But if he's beaten by a bunch of amateurs then he and Kaiba aren't as good as they say after all." said Mai.
She smiled calming herself. There would be other tournaments where she could win some money. And she doubted someone who could beat Seto in one match would fail so easily in Duelist Kingdom. She took a sip of wine she'd ordered from the menu and smiled. She put her deck away in her suit case. There wouldn't be any dueling here unless someone else got on the wrong boat. She smiled changing into a one piece purple swimsuit she'd borrowed from the mansion. She was lucky they had spares here. She then headed out to the pool to relax and see if there were any cute guys here. She didn't think anything would last but it would still be fun.
