The Smaller the Better

[Tape Recorder]

"Why would we not be up? There are too many people around during the day to be able to walk around, then." Tape Recorder placed her cords on her 'hips'. "Not allowed to let them know we can walk and talk and all that, y'know. Not except for babies, before they can talk, if I remember. I don't think I ever saw a baby, though."

She smiled. "Whatever the case, I'm glad that things at least went well for you. I still don't know who replaced my batteries, as I simply woke up in the forest again." She sighed. "I suppose it would have been nice to have an owner."

This peaked her curiosity. "Speaking of which, why did you run away, Phanny? Did you get one of these locks?" She held up her lock. "It was tied to me, when I woke up. I have no idea why I have it, though."

[phanny]

"Uh huh. A' got a lock tuu," The blue fan nodded, "A' was invited here, s' A' desided t' come 'round. Just thought A' could use a man - or woman - A' not be picky. Me master be a collectah, thy knaw? There a loot of fans n' other older things. It may take a while fur me t' me missed, A' figured. But A' do plan on comein' back."

She nodded to herself for a little while before stopping and stareing out.

"Ye do knaw that this is about, dontcha?" She asked after a couple moments.

[Lampy]

"Oh yeah, I see what you mean." the gooseneck lamp replied to Tape Recorder. Did Aphrodite know about this? "Well, then why would we be here in the first place?" he thought rubbing his head with his plug.

Lampy then focused on the Irish fan as she spoke. "Yeah, I know why were here, it's for this love game right?" he asked, obviously not thinking ahead.

"Love game?" Well, this was awkward. Tape Recorder tapped her chin thoughtfully. She had known appliances to care about each other, and she had known of an appliance's love for its master. Is that what Lampy meant? "I'm afraid, I don't exactly understand, Bright Boy!" she called down.

And Phanny talking about needing a man or a woman. If she had a master, then what did that mean. Flirt that she was, Tape Recorder was having a hard time piecing things together. She pouted a little. "Wait. You don't mean, making a connection, do you? Like, that forever together stuff you see with humans?"

[phanny]

"Yes. That be it," Phanny said, "A' think we've been choosen fer this. Weer supposed t' be finding boyfriends er gurlfriends here - that's why we be brought."

She hinted at a shrug with her cords.

"A' guess while A'm here, A' might 's well give a shot, eh? But, ye knaw, there not be many like us about. A'm wounderin' how that's supposed t' work. Not t' comfortable with talkin' t' a human meself."

"A girlfriend?" Lampy repeated, a bit shocked at the idea. "So that's why were all here." he thought looking down at his key. But wasn't love for humans and animals? He, Tape Recorder and Phanny were appliances. Why would they need love? As far as was concerned, the only thing close to love that he felt was his loyalty towards the Master. The lamp then thought about the night, the night when they were still out looking for the Master. They had stopped for the night, and for some reason, Toaster was being awfully nice to Blanky, which was very out of character for him. When Lampy questioned it, he said it was like a warm, toasty feeling inside, or a glow as he saw it. Could that be what this was like? And during the storm, when he sarcraficed himself for his friends, was that out of love?

Lampy then broke out of his trance. "Yeah, neither am I." he shrugged at Phanny. "But uh, since we can't talk to humans, who are we supposed to find love with. I mean it's not like we can be love with animals, they're a totally different species than us."

[Tape Recorder]

Tape Recorder was also curious at this point. She had never thought about actually getting together with another appliance before. She had mused about it with pencil sharpener once, but that was more just to have someone to talk to. Actual romance seemed a stretch. She rubbed her chin in thought. "You know, I don't really know. I mean, it's not like appliances go to these 'weddings' or have 'weddings' like I'm heard cars talk about humans having. I'm not even sure I remember the last time I've made a real connection with anyone."

She held her cords up defensively in Phanny's direction. "No offense intended, of course. It was sort of 'every appliance for themselves' at the parts shop. I'm not even sure what kind of guy I would settle down with or would want to settle down with me. Those amplifiers are always too loud and keep fighting with each other, after all. And it seems like we're the only animate appliances around here."

She smirked down at Lampy. He really seemed to be the only male in their group right now. Still, she wasn't sure about romance. "Do you need any help getting back onto the table, Bright Boy?"

[Lampy]

Lampy picked himself up and hoped back on the desk. "No, I'm fine, but thanks for asking." he smiled. "So what are we suppossed to do about this love game. Couldn't we just go home, I mean there's really no reason for us staying here now." The desk lamp said.

Phanny stared vacantly for a while. Then she jolted and spoke up.

"Ye are right; there not be many other appliances 'ere. What are we gonna do?" She tapped the prongs on her cord for a minute, "A' think there was this magic lady woo brought us here. Maybeh we could see her about it? A' think it's safe t' talk t' her; A' don' think she be a human... Maybe we coul' get sent home oor have moore appliances brooght in?"

[Tape Recorder]

"I do suppose that would be the plan." Tape Recorder smirked. "It's not like marriage would be worth our time, let alone love. Can't have baby batteries or anything quite so ridiculous, after all. Though I do admit that a little companionship never hurt anyone."

She stepped over to Lampy's side. Whether to shock Phanny or to just be the old tease she used to be, she ran one of her plug along Lampy's face gently. "So, what do you see, Bright Boy? Care to take me home to this master of yours? Does he need an old tape recorder?"

[Lampy]

Lampy gulped hard a felt himself getting warmer. Did the Master need a new tape recorder. It didn't seem like he did, the Master was content with his current appliances and Lampy or the others never did hear him talking about wanting a tape recorder, that and the fact Tape Recorder seemed a bit outdated compared to some of the newer electronics. But Lampy was a bit outdated himself, he had to learn that by getting thrown out of the Master's old apartment by a bunch of "cutting edge" appliances. But he didn't want to hurt Tape Recorder's feelings and besides, Lampy knew the Master wouldn't mind one more appliance in his dorm, right?

"Um, sure, I think he does." The skinny lamp said, still hot and nervous.
