Brief History: Slagar was originally named Chickenhound, and, along with his healer mother Sela, made a pact with Cluny the Scourge. However, they proved disloyal and were executed by Cluny's rats. Sela was slain, but Chickenhound barely survived and crawled to Redwall Abbey, where they took him in and cared for him. In return, he stole a sack full of trinkets and artifacts from the Abbey, but before he could escape he was confronted by Brother Methuselah. Chickenhound killed the old mouse with the heavy sack, and fled into the woods. He evaded Constance the badger, who chased after him in a fury, but while hiding under a large tree stump he was attacked by the adder, Asmodeus Poisonteeth. Chickenhound survived the deadly bite with his knowledge of healing, but his face and mind were forever deformed and twisted from the venom.
Renaming himself Slagar the Cruel, he gathered a band of weasels, stoats, and ferrets and tricked his way into Redwall Abbey in order to exact his "revenge" upon the warrior mouse Matthias, whom he held responsible for his disfigurement. Slagar captured Matthias's son as well as some other young creatures to be sold as slaves to the underground kingdom of the polecat Malkariss, with the intent to Rule Malkariss himself and take his revenge on Redwall at the same time. He even went so far as to twist his retelling of his Past to young Mattimeo, in order to portray himself as a victim.
He never expected to receive a letter with a key inside, with promises of Love. Slagar never knew such a thing, except the love for his Mother. But, instead, he thought back on what might happen if he acted out on this letter and took his chances after he had plotted everything out. He left a Second in Command in charge of delivering his newest ring of Slaves before he left for the Island, however, Romance was far, far away from his mind at the moment.
Despite his semi-insanity caused by the adder venom (Hint: Taking off his mask/trying to touch his face is a bad thing.), Slagar is extremely intelligent and manipulative, constantly fooling his enemies and betraying his allies by whatever means to get what he wants; if he wants something. Slagar is somewhat egotistical, crafty, pitiless, ruthless and unimaginably cruel (as his name implies). However he can be polite, kind and courteous when the situation calls for it, even to other Foxes such as himself (with gritted teeth).
Sample: Slagar's eyes narrowed behind his silken mask, arms crossed and tail swishing as he watched a Human boy and another Human child get in to an argument about something utterly foolish, well, to the Fox it was, though he paid no mind as to what it was actually about. The Foxes eyes never left the mean-spirited child as he continued on to further insult the other, and from the look on the other Child's face, what he was saying hit a little too close to home. Then again, what the boy was saying meant little to Slagar as well. He nearly laughed as the other Boy left in a huff, trying not to cry as the Fox watched from a darkened corner of the room. 'Pathetic...'. There was something about cruelty in others that was funny to him. But what mattered if someone was good at being Cruel or not, and the other Child clearly displayed what was adequate enough to impress the Sly One.
Briefly, the masked Fox glanced to the brass key hanging from his neck and scowled at it. He had no need for Romance or Love, it would only get in his way and make him weak. And Slagar the Cruel was not weak by any means. If he had to, and he grimaced at the thought along with the uneasy feeling in his stomach, act like he was in love in order to fool someone, he would. But he wouldn't stoop to such a low level, as having genuine feelings for others was the least thing on his mind. He had bigger plans in store.
His attention flickered back to the Boy and he gave a small smile, dropping his usual jagged and venomous tone in to a calmer and smooth one, something crafted in order to make him sound rather friendly, if a little cautious. Hands behind his back, the Fox cleared his throat to get the Boy's attention and stepped forward, to where the boy could see him clearly, then made a small, polite bow before he spoke up.
"Good show, child, Good show indeed. You have impressed Me, there are not very many who can do that. However, if I may make a small suggestion..."
If he wanted any potential plans to work, he would need followers. And Manipulative ones were often the best, because they were just as unpredictable as he was often enough, and that often lead to...interesting results. Challenging results. And who in their right mind would refuse a Challenge from Slagar himself?
